While originally used as a thirst-slaking beverage, we have found Switchel to be incredibly versatile– most recently we have been experimenting with some delicious cocktail recipes! Switchel lends itself very well to blending with all sorts of ingredients and we’ve come up with the following yummy drinks:


The New Switcheltini

4 ounces Switchel

1 ounce Barr Hill Vodka (or other vodka of your choice)

Squeeze of lemon

1/2 dropperful of Urban Moonshine Citrus Bitters

Shake all ingredients with ice. Serve in a chilled martini glass.



The Switchel Storm

1 1/2 ounces Dunc’s Mill Maple Flavored Rum

1 ounce Switchel Concentrate

1 teaspoon grated ginger root

1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

6 ounces seltzer water

A slice of lime

Rub the rim of a glass with the lime peel & half fill glass with ice. Add all the ingredients except the seltzer to the glass and stir. Pour seltzer in and stir gently once or twice to combine. Garnish with the lime slice.



Better than the Woodstove (makes 2 drinks)

2 ounces Vermont Spirits #14 Bourbon

1 ounce Fernet Branca liqueur

8 ounces Switchel

Shake with ice & pour into two glasses.




Switchel Hot Toddy (makes 2 drinks)

1 12-ounce bottle of Switchel

1 half-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled

4 slices of lemon

1 1/2 ounces whiskey

Slice the ginger thinly. Heat the Switchel with the ginger slices until it starts to simmer; meanwhile, squeeze a slice of lemon into each of 2 mugs and add the whiskey. Pour the hot Switchel and ginger into the mugs and top up with hot water if you like. Garnish with the other lemon slices.


Gerry, a Vermont Switchel fan from the Rutland area gave us this recipe dubbed the “HayMakers Mark”.

2 ounces Makers Mark Bourbon

6-8 Ounces Vermont Switchel

A few drops of Orange Bitters

Shake and serve on the rocks, and enjoy!


Here’s one called The Axe Handle from the Morgan Family:

6 ounces of Vermont Switchel

A shot of bourbon

And juice of a lemon slice

Serve over ice in an Old-Fashioned glass.
